The US Army Corps of Engineers had an ambitious project outlined in the Request for Proposal released for the Armed Forces Reserve Center at Moffett Field. They wanted six buildings designed and built on a constrained budget.
Innovative Design-Build Approach
Diablo Plumbing Partnered with Barge Waggoner and partners, Walbridge/Overaa Construction, put their innovation hats on and delivered a design approach that not only provided a complete project but also included all preferences expressed – and all within the construction cost limit. Barge Waggoner provided project management, architecture, engineering, and landscape architecture for the 270,000-SF complex that houses the Armed Forces Reserve Center, Regional Readiness Sustainment Command Headquarters, Fitness Center, and Organizational Maintenance Facility.
Delivered Results
The result of the new approach was a complex that combined the six buildings into three, a change that resulted in increased construction efficiency and decreased cost. The cost savings allowed for additional preferences to be included within the budget. Sustainable design was an integral part of the project and the facility achieved LEED Silver Certification. Finally, the design/build team earned an overall CCASS rating of “Outstanding” from the US Army Corps of Engineers – Louisville District for the construction and design.
